Most facility managers judge a fire extinguisher cover the way they’d judge almost any piece of outdoor gear, by how it looks. Cracks, fading, a torn seam, that’s a reasonable thing to go by, and honestly, it’s how most of us size up anything sitting outside all year. There’s just one wrinkle nobody tells you about. A cover’s real protection can run out weeks or months before any of that becomes visible.

Why a Cover’s Real Lifespan Isn’t Something You Can Eyeball

A weatherproof fire extinguisher cover doesn’t resist UV on its own. The plastic itself is pretty vulnerable to sunlight. What protects it is a chemical additive package built into the material, usually a class of compounds called hindered amine light stabilizers, mixed in at the manufacturing stage. These additives intercept the free radicals UV light generates in the plastic, before those radicals start breaking down the polymer chains underneath.

That additive package gets consumed as it works. It doesn’t last forever, and it doesn’t announce when it’s running low, there’s no warning light. The plastic can look basically fine right up until the stabilizer runs dry, and only then does the material start cracking and losing strength, often within a matter of weeks. By the time a cover looks visibly worn, the seals it was supposed to be shielding have usually already been exposed for a while.

So a UV rating, one year, two years, seven years, is really an engineered chemical clock more than a description of appearance.

Standard vinyl covers carry roughly a one-year UV rating, and that number comes from how long the additive package in typical vinyl holds up under real sun exposure. A cover that’s structurally failed stops meeting that requirement even while it’s still physically wrapped around the cylinder. An inspector checking gauge visibility and physical condition isn’t rating how presentable the cover looks, they’re checking whether the extinguisher underneath is protected.
